The Daniel Morcombe Foundation

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation since 2005 has been campaigning to make Australia a safer place for all children by enabling them to reach their full potential, free from the damaging life-long effects of sexual harm and abuse.

In December 2003, 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe was abducted and murdered by twice-convicted paedophile Brett Cowan.
Since 2014, the Morcombe family have publicly supported and advocated for the development of a publicly accessible sex offender register in Australia – referred to as Daniel’s Law in honour of the Morcombe’s son Daniel.
Daniel’s Law would ensure the register is freely accessible to the community, federally funded, and understood more broadly as an educational tool.
The register would focus on protecting and informing the community. The register would also act as a deterrent for those individuals who commit crimes of a sexual nature against children.
The Federal Register would contain the following information:
- Offender’s name. alias and nickname.
- Geographical area of an offender’s principal place of residence.
- Ability to statistically search an area for residing offenders.
- Detail the general nature of their offending against children.
- A current photo and identifying features namely tattoos, unique posture, unusual gait, or stance, hair colour, ethnicity and gender.
Recently Queensland have adopted Daniel’s Law into legislation ;
With Tasmania looking set to follow introducing similar legislation ;

With 2 states now implementing this much needed legislation it is highly important we as a community place as much pressure on the Federal Government to implement Federal Legislation and a Federal Register.
One question that needs to be asked is the following:
What has happened to the National Child Sex Offender Register?
The Department of Home Affairs commenced consultations for the National Child Sex Offender register in January 2019. The 2019 – 2020 Federal Budget provided $7.8 million to establish a National Child Sex Offenders Register.
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation wants to know – Where is the Register?
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation has completed an opinion paper on the topic of Australia’s Publicly Accessible Sex Offender Register, which we hope will reignite the conversation and ultimately see some action take place.
DAY FOR DANIEL
Together, we’re Keeping Kids Safe
Held annually on the last Friday of October, Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness event.
This special day honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe and reinforces the vital message that keeping kids safe is a responsibility we all share — parents, carers, educators, businesses… the entire community.
We invite schools, early learning centres, and businesses and individuals to register and participate in Day for Daniel, helping to spread this crucial message and empower children with personal safety education.
The Morcombe’s have put together a film – "Don’t Waste It“

✔ The future of child safety in Australia
About The Film
Through the voices of Bruce and Denise Morcombe, the film traces their relentless search for Daniel and their transformation of grief into a nationwide movement for child safety. From the heartbreaking events of 2003 to the founding of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in 2005, the documentary illustrates how one family’s tragedy sparked a lasting mission to educate, protect, and empower children across Australia.
Designed as both a tribute and an educational resource, Don’t Waste It! speaks directly to teens aged 13 to 15, helping them understand personal safety in real-world situations.
The film highlights the Foundation’s evolution—from its early days of distributing child safety resources to becoming a national leader in prevention and advocacy. As it explores the ongoing challenges in child protection, it underscores why Daniel’s story remains as important today as ever.
More than a legacy piece, Don’t Waste It! is a call to action, equipping kids with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe.
